Embarkation of the Queen of Sheba

I suppose one of the reasons that I have introduced this work into my gallery is because it relieves the, somewhat, rather sombre nature and colours of the other Masters' works I have chosen; it is brighter, more lively and the theme is not so heavy. It might be worth pointing out that Claude has two other works which are almost mirror images of the "Embarkation", certainly in composition - one of them even includes the word "Embarkation" in its title: "The Embarkation of St. Ursula". The other is entitled "A Seaport" - both also in the National Gallery's collection. The rendering of the sunset is exquisite. Would you like to compare them?

My thanks to The National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, London, for their kind permission in allowing me to use this download in my gallery.
