Leander attempted to swim the strait to the tower where Hero, his beloved mistress was, and drowned in the attempt. Another story has it that the Sultan kept his daughter there for safety because she was fated to die from a serpent's bite. This happened in any case when a serpent found its way into a fruit basket which was delivered to her.
