Another of David Roberts' beautifully clear drawings; this time of the Greek Orthodox section - the Katholicon - of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, in Jerusalem, as it appeared to him 160 years ago. The side walls which make it seem narrow, today were not then in existence and consequently - apart from any artistic licence he may have allowed himself, the chapel appears as a large expansive hall. The "give-away" is the urn in the centre of the floor which, belief has it, marks the center of the world. As I mentioned in my comments on the first of his etchings that I introduced, he made a large number on his travels throughout the east Mediterranean, including Egypt, along the Nile, Syria and east of the Jordan
