Erected in honour of Constantine and commemorating his great victory over Maxentius at the famed "Battle of Milvian Bridge" on 28 October 312 (See "In hoc signa vinces"). It was as a result of this victory that Constantine found himself leaning more and more towards Christianity, although for reasons of what were, probably, political expediency, he was not himself to be actually baptised until on his deathbed, 28 years later.
